WA “Backs Down” To A 60% Tax
The outlandish HB1645 bill we’ve all come to know, and hate, has been transformed into HB2211 which focuses on taxes. HB1645 also passed out of committee Monday, dropping the portions of taxation and usage bans.
I really hate to reference myself, but I have to give myself a pat on the back. In my March 15th article “Ban A Little Tax A Little”, I laid out a strategic plan that happens all across the nation that politicians use to make you think that they are making a good compromise. Apparently my “modest compromise” of 5% taxation came under-budget by about 1,200%. HB2211 is coming in at 60%, but hopefully vapers in Washington can put this one to bed at the next committee hearing currently scheduled for this Friday, April 3rd at 8:00am. If passed, a 60% excise tax would still be the highest in the nation.
A statement went out via e-mail from Joe Baba of the WA Vape Association on Monday asking for people to be on guard and watch for updates in the next couple days on what they can do to help out for this next round. You can find out more by visiting the Washington Vape Association‘s Facebook.
Conveniently for vapers in Washington and across the US, Monday also brought a shocking turn of events in the “Still Blowing Smoke” campaign that everyone has been talking about. The Tobacco Free CA Facebook page hosted an answer to their first question they wished to respond to, which was “Are e-cigarettes less harmful than traditional cigarettes?”. The first statement, followed by a couple paragraphs of retort about why traditional cigarette smoking is bad for you was “Yes! The research and studies have all signs pointing to e-cigarettes being less harmful than traditional cigarettes.”.
Tobacco Free CA also stated “Switching completely from traditional cigarettes to only e-cigarettes, a person will inhale fewer toxic chemicals to get the same dose of nicotine. And we think that’s a really good thing! Many of you have commented how much better you feel already from switching from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes. Of course you do – you’re not inhaling 7,000 chemicals in your body! All of this is good news. And to many of you, it’s old news. Those in the cessation treatment profession would agree, quitting traditional tobacco is a process. It is a personal journey that people pursue differently and use different quitting methods.”.
For those of us looking into the science, not only is there “fewer toxic chemicals” as Tobacco Free CA stated, but one should also look at the amounts delivered of those chemicals and why. As Greg Conley, president of the American Vaping Association says on toxicity, “The dose makes the poison.”.
Keep on the lookout for more answers to the questions that are purported to be answered on their Tobacco Free CA Facebook page. And, I’d be utterly disappointed if nobody quoted Tobacco Free CA’s statements at the up-coming hearing in Washington. (Hint hint)
