Vaping is Better for Gut Bacteria Than Smoking
Recently, gut bacteria, also known as microbiome, has made headlines as a very important aspect of our health. This bacteria plays roles in all sorts of bodily processes, from our immune system to our mood. Many people eat specialty yogurts, drink Kombucha, or eat probiotics in order to make their gut bacteria even better and stronger. So when a study at Newcastle University found that vaping is better for gut bacteria than smoking, many people took notice.
Vaping is Better for Gut Bacteria, Details
This study took bacterial samples from 30 different participants — 10 who vaped, 10 combustible cigarette smokers, and 10 non-smokers. Scientists genetically sequenced samples from fecal, saliva, and skin samples. It was found that smokers had a higher prevalence of Prevotella, which is a kind of bacteria known for increasing the risk of colon cancer and colitis. It also seemed that smokers were less likely to have Bacteroides, which is a species of beneficial probiotic. A lack of Bacteroides can cause higher rates of Crohn’s disease and obesity. These findings from the study made it clear that vaping is better for gut bacteria than smoking, which is yet another reason to make the switch.
Gut bacteria is essential in processes in the body. One major example of this is in managing fluctuating moods. The vagus nerve connects our digestive tract to our brain and when our gut bacteria is out of whack, our mood is negatively affected. It has also been suggested that athletes have a better make up of gut bacteria and you can alter your gut bacteria by exercising more. Not to mention that you can help yourself absorb more nutrients from food by increasing good bacteria in your digestive system.
Overall, this study is a very positive step in the right direction for the vaping industry. Because vaping is better for gut bacteria than smoking, it would make sense that switching over to e cigarettes is a smart move, as the author of the study suggests:
“More investigation is needed,” Stewart said. “But to find that vaping is less-damaging than smoking on our gut bacteria adds to the incentive to change to e-cigarettes and for people to use them as a tool to quit smoking completely.”
